Thomas Jefferson Memorial, Washington, D.C.

This aerial view of the Jefferson Memorial shows the "pantheon-like" design originally proposed by the 1901 Senate Park Commission, a plan which lay dormant for 37 years until FDR spearheaded its completion in 1943. The memorial stands on the site of what had been a popular public beach.
