Ford creates a car-nation . . .
Henry Ford dreamed of supplying the average person with an affordable automobile. Against the advice of his financiers he persisted in working with his engineers to design and build a lightweight, low-cost car for the masses. In 1908, he succeeded. As the first Model T rolled off the company's assembly line from the Detroit manufacturing plant, Ford was the first to hop in and take it for a spin. The test-drive was a huge success, and the car was ready to market. With a price tag of $825, a typical American could own a Ford Model T and cruise the streets at the amazing speed of 25 miles per hour.
