     After four hundred years of dreams, planning, negotiating, and finally, construction, the Panama Canal stands today as an engineering marvel. Six pairs of locks lift ships 85 feet above sea level allowing them to cross the 51-mile stretch between the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans.
